== Vive le CANADA === January 11, PM's statement:

"Today, we honour a founding father of our country - our very first Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Sir John Alexander Macdonald.

"Sir John A. Macdonald, in partnership with George-Étienne Cartier, George Brown, Thomas D'Arcy McGee, Sir Charles Tupper and other great Canadians, provided the vision and drive that created a trans-continental country. As a child immigrant, he arrived in a Canada that was largely confined to the territories that bordered the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes. As a result of his efforts by the time he died in 1891, Canada extended across the entire North American continent and included the Atlantic provinces, the prairies as well as British Columbia.

"'A great nation-great in thought, great in action, great in hope, and great in position,' was how he described Canada's future. Canadians give thanks today that his dream has largely been accomplished.

"He achieved this vision of creating a trans-continental country by binding it together through shared national institutions such as our federal Parliament, through the trans-continental railroad linking eastern and central Canada with British Columbia and the Pacific Ocean and through the Northwest Mounted Police (later the Royal Canadian Mounted Police) which brought law and order to the Canadian prairies and earned a reputation for treating all Canadians fairly and equally under the law. Our first Prime Minister was also involved in preserving our natural heritage through the establishment of Canada's first national park in Banff, Alberta.

"I encourage all Canadians across Canada to take time today to reflect upon the life and legacy of this remarkable Canadian leader."

=== from the EDITOR'S DESK ===

Happy New Year! Best wishes for a healthy, productive, and satisfying year.

+ OPEN? More on this later but have noted a tendency to deny either openness (premise/intent for all WG sessions) or campaign promises.

+ The Mayor's introduction of Cmte of the Whole mtgs may be a great improvement.

+ A reader commented that producing the newsletter must cost a lot. Yes, it does. ~$500 a month (paper, printing, distribution, etc) and that doesn't include the time for attending mtgs/functions and writing. Pagination is a pain. No surprise I recommend readers subscribe by email (subscribewvm@westvan.org). This issue, no transcript, will cost about $2 but most range from $3 to $5. No advertising.

{Donations gratefully accepted :-) }

THE EDGE OF A SHADOW -- The Paintings of Ruth Killam Massey Opening Reception January 15 at 7pm

...our earth, our land is what we should cherish most, as humans come and go, but the land stays on. -- Arthur Lismer

Like the edge of a shadow, which Ruth Massey referred to as being so eloquent, Masseys paintings express the ever-changing mood of the coastal landscape, using a distinct colour pallet and soft-edged brushwork. Hernando Island, where she had a summer home, was a favourite muse of Masseys and this is one place where her view that the expression of mood in nature through its slate of vibrant inter-relationships could be explored on the boundary between the sea and shore and the hillside and forest. Massey framed views of the ocean through piles of driftwood and windswept grasses and at times, turned her perspective inland to capture the interplay of light and shadow in the branches of a craggy tree or created by clouds passing overhead. The exhibition is a tribute and celebration of Ruth Massey (1924 2011) and the legacy she created over her lifetime.

> January 8 20 ~~ "Above & Beyond"

My Artists Corner [ http://myartistscorner.ca ] is a collective of artists living with mental health issues who embrace and promote art as a limitless tool for self-expression and as a vital tool for recovery. Above & Beyond explores the beauties of the natural world, specifically those linked to the theme of Galaxy. We invite viewers to linger, observe, and immerse themselves in the colours, textures, and uniqueness of each painting. The lone naked eye is not capable of seeing all of the universes bounty at once and we believe this idea can also be applied to MAC and the stigma against mental health. You cannot fully appreciate any person, place, or thing until it is given the time to be acknowledged and heard; only then will it reveal its true self.

The Opening Reception: Tuesday January 8th from 6 - 8pm

> January 22 - February 3 ~~ "The Path to Nirvana"

Painters Jenna Lamont, oil and acrylic, and Sioux Bonderove, watercolour, invite you to take a journey to the divine through their ethereal and contemplative works of art. Incorporating spiritual iconography and mythological figures into dreamlike worlds of colour and texture, these works aim to soothe the soul and offer a moment of peace and joy.

Opening reception on Tuesday January 22nd from 6 - 8pm

=== NATURE === from David Cook

Thursday January 17 -- Botany Section Evening Programme

Discovering new plant species in western North America in the 21st century.

Chris Sears

The current rate of species discovery in North America is the same as it was one hundred years ago. Discovering new species requires insight, detective work, careful observation, and luck. Chris's talk will cite examples of newly discovered British Columbian species from his research on Kwakiutls hollyfern, rein-orchids, and hawksbeard.

Chris recently received his PhD in plant systematics from UBC. For his dissertation work, he synthesized information from multiple areas of original research to discover new species and better circumscribe species boundaries of native North American Hawksbeard (Crepis). He is currently CEO of Hawksbeard Environmental Consulting.

The evening programs of the Botany Section are held from January through April and September through November on the third Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Unity Church, 5840 Oak St, Vancouver.

For more info and suggestions for future programs pls contact the Program Co-ordinator David Cook at 924 0147.

HAPPY NEW BEER!

Scrumptious!  We discovered a great new one at Howe Sound Brewing in Squamish: Megadestroyer Imperial Licorice Stout (seven different malts, molasses, licorice root, and star anise - 75 IBU and 23 degrees Plato/1.096 SG) -- a beer you'll not soon forget!

My favourite sentence to say aloud (from WVM24):

Once upon a time there were..five ostrobogulous skipperty flipperty filthy grubby muddy little pigs.

And what's a msg from me without Qtn/Tht/Pun?  gotta go out with a smile.....

re WVM24, It will come as no surprise to you that as soon as I saw it I had to put in the quotation from Alexandre Dumas, pere, -- and I loved the one from Dr Seuss.

Holidays sometimes provide time to read.  If anyone finds the time to read about Ithkuil (in LANGUAGEWATCH, in WVM24) and has a few moments, I'd really be interested in your comments.  Actually, you're most welcome to write about a book you've read for me to put in as a recommendation in BOOKWATCH.  The NYT had a list of the best of 2012 (put in WVM24), and our Library is asking you for the name of the best book you read this year (contest in WVM24) and you'll be entered for their draw Jan 2.

Last QTP of the year: moved to WVM2013-01

How are cities across North America making the most efficient use of their limited transportation resources? How are they achieving larger job creation, resilience, public health, equity and human happiness goals? Jeff Tumlin has the answers.

Jeffrey Tumlin is singlehandedly changing the way America thinks about transportation. Instead of measuring success by how many freeways a city has, Tumlin is showing that transportation choices (including design for bikes and pedestrians) can improve public health, happiness, and social vitalityand save city budgets. He is the author of Sustainable Transportation Planning: Tools for Creating Vibrant, Healthy, and Resilient Communities(Wiley, February 2012).

AT METRO THEATRE

One of the North American Stage's most beloved works.

Director Don Briard is busy putting the finishing touches on Barefoot in the Park, the beloved Neil Simon comedy which is as funny today as it was when it first opened on Broadway in 1963.

In the show, Corrie Bratter (Amy Rhead) and Paul Bratter (Albert Nassrallah) are newly wed. For their first home, they live in an apartment on the top floor of a Brownstone in New York City. During the course of four days, the couple learn to live as a "couple" while facing the usual daily ups-and-downs. Corrie wants Paul to become more easy-going, to, for example, run "barefoot in the park".A meddling mother-in-law (Sabrina Prada) and eccentric neighbour (Chris Dellinger) help to complicate things, while trying to help.

Barefoot in the Park will preview on Jan 11, and run through Feb 9 Matinees Jan 20 and 27

Best Value In Vancouver Theatre Take in the Preview on Barefoot! $12 a Ticket

If you are looking for a bargain, and a different experience think about the preview on Jan 11.

Tickets are only $12, making it the best dollar value in Vancouver theatre. Plus being a preview, you may get a peek behind the scenes as anything can happen as the cast and crew shake out the last bugs before opening night.

Meet us in the Bar!

Don't forget to plan for a slightly later evening than normal when you visit the Metro. One of the unique and terrific traditions at the Metro is the cast retiring to the Metro bar after each performance to unwind and greet the audience.

Nowhere else in Vancouver does can the audience be assured of being able to have a quick chat and perhaps a beverage of choice with the cast and crew of the evening's entertainment.

Metro is community theatre, community is conversation, access, and fellowship, join us in the bar and say hi!

:-| Berlusconi blasts feminist, communist magistrates for ex-wifes divorce settlement

Associated Press, Updated: Wednesday, January 9, 10:54 AM

ROME Former Premier Silvio Berlusconi has infuriated Italys legal establishment by blasting a group of female magistrates as feminist and communist for what he said was a 200,000- ($260,000-) a-day divorce settlement...

...Berlusconi and Lario were married in 1990 and have three adult children. Lario filed for divorce in 2009, citing Berlusconis fondness for younger women.

Berlusconi also has two other children from his first marriage.

Berlusconi, who is currently dating someone nearly 50 years his junior, is on trial in Milan accused of paying for sex with an underage Moroccan teen and using his office to cover it up.

:-? Attawapiskat received ~$100M 2005 - 2011 but no documentation? What did they do with the money since the ~1800 ppl live in abject poverty? Why did the feds give out so much money not knowing what was happening with it???

:0) Age The median age of Vancouver residents was 39.0 in 2009 (Statistics Canada, 2009). The median age range of the sample was 35-44. The sample had a normal distribution and is representative of the population with respect to age.

{MUCH younger than WV -- in 1990 the median age in WV was 50 and we have one of the largest proportions of retirees; will get the stats for the next issue.}

SOUTH HEBRON HILLS: Massafer Yatta Firing Zone 918 Update

On 16 December, lawyers from the Association for Civil Rights in Israel submitted legal objections to Israel's High Court of Justice regarding the planned creation of Firing Zone 918 and the eviction of eight villages in Massafer Yatta. The High Court granted the request for a 30-day extension of the intermediate orders that prevented the displacement of the inhabitants who reside within proposed zone. The lawyers will submit new petitions by 16 January seeking new intermediate orders.

=== SEXWATCH === L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.

Well, I had heard of LGBT but not L.G.B.T.Q.I.A. etc.........

Generation LGBTQIA

by MICHAEL SCHULMAN published: January 9, 2013

STEPHEN IRA BEATTY, a junior at Sarah Lawrence College, uploaded a video last March on We Happy Trans, a site that shares positive perspectives on being transgender.

In the breakneck six-and-a-half-minute monologue hair tousled, sitting in a wood-paneled dorm room Stephen exuberantly declared himself a queer, a nerd fighter, a writer, an artist and a guy who needs a haircut, and held forth on everything from his style icons (Truman Capote and any male-identified person who wears thigh-highs or garters) to his toy zebra.

Because Stephen, who was born Kathlyn, is the 21-year-old child of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, the video went viral, garnering nearly half a million views. But that was not the only reason for its appeal. With its adrenalized, freewheeling eloquence, the video seemed like a battle cry for a new generation of post-gay gender activists, for whom Stephen represents a rare public face.

Armed with the millennial generations defining traits Web savvy, boundless confidence and social networks that extend online and off Stephen and his peers are forging a political identity all their own, often at odds with mainstream gay culture.........

Youth today do not define themselves on the spectrum of L.G.B.T., said Shane Windmeyer, a founder of Campus Pride, a national student advocacy group based in Charlotte, N.C.

Part of the solution has been to add more letters, and in recent years the post-post-post-gay-rights banner has gotten significantly longer, some might say unwieldy. The emerging rubric is L.G.B.T.Q.I.A., which stands for different things, depending on whom you ask.

Q can mean questioning or queer, an umbrella term itself, formerly derogatory before it was appropriated by gay activists in the 1990s. I is for intersex, someone whose anatomy is not exclusively male or female. And A stands for ally (a friend of the cause) or asexual, characterized by the absence of sexual attraction.

It may be a mouthful, but its catching on, especially on liberal-arts campuses.

The University of Missouri, Kansas City, for example, has an L.G.B.T.Q.I.A. Resource Center that, among other things, helps student locate gender-neutral restrooms on campus. Vassar College offers an L.G.B.T.Q.I.A. Discussion Group on Thursday afternoons. Lehigh University will be hosting its second annual L.G.B.T.Q.I.A. Intercollegiate Conference next month, followed by a Queer Prom. Amherst College even has an L.G.B.T.Q.Q.I.A.A. center, where every group gets its own letter........

And with a plethora of ever-expanding categories like genderqueer and androgyne to choose from, each with an online subculture, piecing together a gender identity can be as D.I.Y. as making a Pinterest board.

BUT sometimes L.G.B.T.Q.I.A. is not enough. At the University of Pennsylvania last fall, eight freshmen united in the frustration that no campus group represented them.

Sure, Penn already had some two dozen gay student groups, including Queer People of Color, Lambda Alliance, and J-Bagel, which bills itself as the universitys Jewish L.G.B.T.Q.I.A. Community. But none focused on gender identity (the closest, Trans Penn, mostly catered to faculty members and graduate students).......

Through Facebook, Richard and others started a group called Penn Non-Cis, which is short for non-cisgender. For those not fluent in gender-studies speak, cis means on the same side as and cisgender denotes someone whose gender identity matches his or her biology, which describes most of the student body. The group seeks to represent everyone else. This is a freshman uprising, Richard said.........

Students read poems and diary entries, and sang guitar ballads. Then Britt Gilbert a punky-looking freshman with a blond bob, chunky glasses and a rock band T-shirt took the stage. She wanted to talk about the concept of bi-gender....

Then he rattled off a list of gender identities, many culled from Wikipedia. We have our lesbians, our gays, he said, before adding, bisexual, transsexual, queer, homosexual, asexual. He took a breath and continued. Pansexual. Omnisexual. Trisexual. Agender. Bi-gender. Third gender. Transgender. Transvestite. Intersexual. Two-spirit. Hijra. Polyamorous....
