Congratulations and welcome to Roddy Mackenzie's wife Ka Hyun who becomes a Canadian citizen on Feb 6, a particularly auspicious date since our Queen Elizabeth became Queen in 1952 on Wednesday Feb 6!

=== from the EDITOR'S DESK ===

The term I predicted for this century is overwhelming me: time poverty.

Hastening to get news out to you, so this issue will not be as comprehensive as usual.

Also, decided to combine next one (it will be on the ccl mtg Jan 21 and the two special mtgs Jan 28).

=== UPDATES & INFO ===

+ WVM List

You may have noticed some had a . or a or a º and sometimes an r or an R after the number of an issue. This indicates changes or revisions after it went out by email. The latest is then put on the website.

+ Foreshore Habitat Restoration

Friday, January 25, 2013

West Vancouver is committed to enhancing and preserving its waterfront and natural habitat. Work is being done to the foreshore between Ambleside and Dundarave as part of the Shoreline Protection Plan and Shoreline Management Plan.

For more information please contact: David Youngson | 604-376-6136

Download Illustrations as PDF (http://v.gd/DWV_Foreshore)

What is the Problem?A natural shoreline is slowly altered by a range of processes including the ebb and flow of tides, wave action and currents, which move sediments along the shoreline. When the supply of sediments to the shoreline is reduced or wave energy increases, these  processes can become unbalanced, resulting in the loss of shoreline.

Prior to the arrival of European settlers, this area was blanketed with thick vegetation that absorbed rainfall and inhibited erosion. A vast network of creeks and streams carried sediments from the mountains to the waterfront. The sediments fed and replenished beaches, while waves and currents redistributed material along the shoreline. Loss of this sediment has made beaches narrower as more waves strike the sea wall, worsening erosion.

Piers, wharves and other structures block the natural movement of sediments along the shoreline.

+ DWV councillor and CAO awarded Diamond Jubilee medals

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

Two-term councillor Michael Lewis and long-serving chief administrative officer Grant McRadu were presented the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medals by Mayor Michael Smith at Mondays DWV council meeting.

Lewis was awarded the medal for his many years of commitment to his community through amateur sports, the arts, and in support of individuals with disabilities. He has played a leadership role in many community organizations, in addition to serving as councillor and on municipal committees in WV and MetroV. He was nominated by the Autism Society of Canada.

WV CAO Grant McRadu was awarded the medal for his 30-plus years of public service as a CAO for local govt. In 1982, at the age of 29, McRadu was the youngest municipal CAO in BC and has since served as CAO for a number of municipalities and as CFO for the Delta School District. He has served on the board of directors of the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators and was elected vice-president of the International City and County Managers, representing over 5000 members world-wide.

The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth IIs accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. It serves to mark the significant contributions and achievements of 60,000 deserving Canadians who will be recognized to receive this honour.

+ At the January 24th WV Streamkeepers' mtg it was announced that John Barker, the President, has also received a Diamond Jubilee medal. Congratulations!

January 16 February 23 THE EDGE OF A SHADOW - The Paintings of Ruth Killam Massey ...our earth, our land is what we should cherish most, as humans come and go, but the land stays on. -- Arthur Lismer

Like the edge of a shadow, which Ruth Massey referred to as being so eloquent, Masseys paintings express the ever-changing mood of the coastal landscape, using a distinct colour pallet and soft-edged brushwork. Hernando Island, where she had a summer home, was a favourite muse of Masseys and this is one place where her view that the expression of mood in nature through its slate of vibrant inter-relationships could be explored on the boundary between the sea and shore and the hillside and forest. Massey framed views of the ocean through piles of driftwood and windswept grasses and at times, turned her perspective inland to capture the interplay of light and shadow in the branches of a craggy tree or created by clouds passing overhead. The exhibition is a tribute and celebration of Ruth Massey (1924 2011) and the legacy she created over her lifetime.

KING LEAR

Contemporary Legend Theater (Taipei, Taiwan)

Presented by the PuSh Int'l Performing Arts Festival and Asian-Canadian Special Events Association

8pm February 1 - 2, The Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts, 777 Homer Street

As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods; They kill us for their sport.

(King Lear Act 1, Scene 4, 36-37)

This is King Lear as you have never experienced it before: Wu Hsing-Kuo of Taiwans Contemporary Legend Theater has created a tour-de-force solo performance that fuses time-honoured Peking Opera techniques with Shakespeares classic tale of great power and cruel deception. This fascinating adaptation has been praised around the world for its blend of Eastern and Western theatrical forms, as well as for its revealing insight into one of Shakespeares most celebrated tragedies.

After the aging king decides to split his kingdom among his daughters, he experiences disillusionment and decline when their true natures are revealed. Wu Hsing-Kuo transitions flawlessly between each character in this athletic and virtuosic telling of a tortured kings descent into madness. Distilled into a series of vignettes, King Lear is backed by a nine-person instrumental ensemble that creates a soundscape echoing the styles of both traditional and contemporary Chinese music.

Contemporary Legend Theater (CLT) was founded in Taiwan in 1986 to integrate traditional Chinese Opera, which at the time was on the decline, with modern theatre. Constantly subverting expectations and preconceptions about Peking Opera, CLT has become known worldwide for their bold, contemporary aesthetic that has been called "one of the best blends of eastern and western techniques" The Guardian (UK).

19 teams surveyed zones on creeks and tributaries: Brothers, Macbeth, Hadden, West Brothers, and MacDonald

helpful, assists

one of the best years for chum salmon in the past ten years, plus coho as expected and even a few chinook were observed

count was outstanding -- a story for the students to tell

Stephanie will be providing a statistical summary for 2012, followed by Jin giving you a student's perspective on the learning experience

SC: total of 104 students, 19 teams

2540 fish observed

19 teams but nine zones so trouble with double counting so 2540 not accurate

total from one team from each zone

1110 fish observed; 300 fish on week four

chum (89%) main in streams; coho (11%) in Bros Crk; five chinook (1%), surprise to see so big; no pinks this year

some from hatchery so may see some in future

trend; most fish we've seen in the first week

chum were about two weeks early

coho followed

all decreased after week four, no more seen after

to make comparable, used five zones

survey for all six years 705, double the amt of last year

cut out some; eggs, so hadn't spawned last year; almost ev one we cut this year had spawned

will pass it on to Jim

JIM: only joined last year, heard about it; driving passion to engage in these activities

passion gave opp, in front of Min of Fisheries and WV Ccl

this time as co-chair

my primary and utmost goal was to provide as many ppl as possible opps same I had

saw, became involved; this can be passed on after i graduate

to have a thorough understanding of what had to be done

otherwise background noise

salmon survey all time high 104 students

shortage of adult sponsors at least 19; not enough heard we had to reject three teams

dividing one person into two, I decided to join others, no mbrs disappointed

learned -- environment, fish, what survey had to offer

many mbrs willing to take part next year

thrilled as leader and someone who went through this last year.

Mayor: conclude your presentation, John?

JB: yes

Sop: over 35 years, salmon survey, catching fingerlings and letting them go

this education prog for students immense

here's the rub: still not the return to salmon, any signif over past 35 years

how's your take on, to improve?

JB: can't do anything about drift nets, xxx, ...

if we lose our habitat we're out of biz

in ocean from 2 to 5 years, if they come back

we can make a diff

MB: congrat on surveys, etc

how many students are you expecting to graduate this year and next year?

Jim: yes, signif mbrs going to graduate; encouraged younger ones

hoping the number will increase for next year with more/newer students

MB: rearing pond is

JB: receiving end of Dec and eggs in Jan

release them up at Queens in McD, Hay Park (several dozen), and Mem Pk

MB: thank you for all your work for salmon

Mayor: really a cmnty working as it shd, one generation passing on to the next

critical ...; amazing how quickly it's turned -- Pender Hbr, xxx, ... [7:21]

resources important; fisheries imp to life of BC

appreciate

NG: liked your graphics, never seen better

Pacific Salmon Fdn is v impressed with the research this group is doing; big part of an integrated whole

you mentioned 19 groups, ea led by an adult leader and you

re scrambling to get them

I see leaders there, can you pls stand up (4); I see some shy

encourage out there watching, urge you to join

{MOTION: received for information, with thanks.}

Mayor: carries unanimously; keep up the good work

Vision, Goals, & Policies

reinforce role of Amb as WV's village ctr

where parade? in Amb

some of our densest resid devt is in Amb

recogn recreational uses

compact more convenient; area long but not much depth

trying to squash comm down a bit and make it a little wider

encourage more comm interesting devt on our streets; toward Clyde Ave as well

prior to adoption of zoning, Clyde Ave was more service and industrial

desire to make it more of a retail comm space; mixed use comm/resid space

where do we want to go?

negative: real feeling in trying to make it vibrant, too many financial institutions and real estate ofcs

walk down street, not want to spend a lot of time

encourage specialty and niche

Amb is not going to compete with PkR; not going to get the same type of retailers, gotta concentrate on other types of retailers

small clothing stores, galleries xxx, xxx, WV Florist, British Butcher Shop, ...

build on location Amb has over PkR -- PkR not on waterfront

arts and culture

have some v successful facilities

look at Farmers' Mkt, looking at moving it to 14th

more festivals, Harmony Arts, Canada Day, more

increase proportion of resid use; by having more, more ppl living there, eyes on the street, going to Amb biz,

Blessed with waterfront, but one side no residences

residences more lucrative; to encourage small retail uses, need also to encourage resid use

CNV had to go to Ccl and do it that way

need to know how night mkt runs

family friendly, live music

Mayor: Mr Leigh, any ideas?

BL: special; from staff perspective fit for whole host of reasons and bring to Ccl

ID: Christie Rosta and Brent Leigh?

BL: [yes]

Mayor: time?

ID: 5 to 10pm

we're right in the shipyard; Pier restaurant, hotel, towers; haven't had a complaint

we did bring in a beer garden ev two weeks

vary bands, diff ev Friday night

Sop: do you invite local biz to participate?

ID: free for xxx groups, eg Prudential Realty had a booth

Sop-: fruit veg vendor or baker?

ID: I cd

asked about restaurants around on Lonsdale, and they said went up in sales

not ev wants to go

some do their shopping then have dinner, wine, at a restaurant;

MB: all year round?

ID: June to Oct

just met with Mayor Mussatto, thought maybe longer but rain is a big factor

Mayor: pls give Mr Leigh.....

[7:58] ML: xxxxxxxx

Sokol: understanding in cmnty

thought things were going to happen

going back to the ecic study to see if still holds

haven't had a lot of bldgs coming into Amb over the last few years though growth everywhere

there are three proposals: WVF rezoning 2.0 so must feel ecic value not at 1.75; mtg last of last year Walker higher proposal, the Grosvenor

makes me feel 1.75 not enough, get someone with expertise to say

ML: are we going to do that?

Sokol: yes

ML: when are we going to do that?

Sokol: ToR; retail inventory by end of month

MB: see what our nbrs to the east are doing -- FAR, xxxx know Amb unique

just speaking to an owner on Clyde, thought it cd be his little nest egg, not at 1.75 so sold out, don't know what's going in there

re Amb Revit -- Shell site? redevt?

Sokol: rec'd rezoning and permit in Dec of 2011; have done remediation of site and planning construction start

the prop adjacent to it, owned by City of Vancouver, an option on that prop so some discussions going on

Mayor: Cclr Cameron

Sop: I had my hand up

Mayor: then you'll go after Cclr C; look fwd

CC: xxx; waterfront; public realm

observation ML; still seems to be some uncertainty, how we vision built envmt; vitality

how we see Amb looking in 20 years

retail ofc and resid

note in the actual strategy doc itself, suggested 5.1.3 make objectives clear [reading aloud] 8:04

don't know if we've done that as we shd hv

look at 1300blk proposal

unfortunately Town Ctr Strategy doesn't give

next to 1300, seems to contradict; concentrate 14 to 18th

another quote

1300blk doesn't reflect that

rental units and 1300 doesn't reflect that

at Design Rev, the proponent cdn't adequately explain how fit in with the future of Amb

{he's referring to Grosvenor}

if N side of 1300blk to stay at three storeys, diff to envision 10 to 12 storeys [sough?]

we have to do more to articulate amt of xxxxx  8:06

encourage resid -- well, how much and what type?

against what standards?

how provide priv sector with predictability, what District wants

{all v good concerns and questions}

Sokol: part of that mkt study we talked about

in Amb Strategy parts say clearly what cmnty wants (and not others) where cmnty was at that pint

great to have ofces but don't want to require it

even though trying to compress, said 1300blk unique and look at it diff, gateway; if only residential wd be boring

what kind of civic, squares? overall goal but buts and caveats

CC: vague in past

but now faced with applications so have to think through those things

unstated goal, for cmnty's sake need to have it more articulated; xxx

{yup}

Mayor: all of cmnty [8:09]

one mbr has a conflict of interest on 1300blk

so xxx

{yes, we wondered why MAB hadn't recused herself as soon as 1300 blk mentioned}

Sop: not one going to start revit; going to be the ongoing philosophy that bldgs, streetscape, waterfront will evolve and take ten years to get there

for clarification purposes, bldg heights; capping of 37ft

another section storeys -- shdn't use storeys, b/c depends on feet, asked you to check that; four storeys if wider and more depth

if start streetscape..... opened food store.... maybe others

others might say it's time to get involved

streetscape and waterfront; we get involved

flak we get when too high; OCP recomm

have you talked to enough landowners that ht/FAR not going to work anywhere?

Sokol: stated in storeys AND in feet so must meet two reqmts

have I spoken to enough onwers? no, I haven't, wch is why I think it imperative to go get the info

pencil out

and we have our CAC wch may or may not impede; need someone with that expertise

TP: when I look at this action sheet in front of me

implementation may be trickier than devping a strategy

we've been at this for a decade; seems to be how we do things in WV, in decades

essential

see p 29, rationale for inclusion of sp sites

key: allow for flexibility; open up and allow flexibility for the mkt to drive it

amenities; almost 30 years looking at waterfront

exciting time; looking forward to public input

MOTION THAT the report from the Dir/Planning dated Jan 7 be received for information.

CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY [8:16]

Mayor: when anticipate coming back with results of public consultation?

Sokol: have to ask Acting Dir of Communications, when

JMcD, A/DirCommunications: late Feb or early March

Mayor: look forward to that

7. Establishing a Community Website Working Group (File: 0117-01)

Jeff McD: contribution group has been making and here to change the scope

recommend become an official WG; we believe the imp and scope worthy

performed two key tasks by our consultants

preferences for design and xxx strategy [8:17]

feel discussion better served with a Ccl rep and xxxx

NG: timeline -- how much will this new approach delay the implementation?

JMcD: not at all; six to eight mtgs between now and end so no delay at all

NG: xxx

JMcD: May/June of this year

ML: a bit out of sequence; normally WG CEC, est a WG

{right; had a murky beginning.  Remember WTF?  started as Website Task Force but wasn't listed as one on the cmte webpage.  When I asked was told it was called a task force but wasn't on.  Then it became the Cmnty Website (Engagement/Devt) Group, so think this is a good move to regularize things.}

is it fair to say what started off a short term and now deem it more appropriate more formal?

JMcD: yes, fair to say

mtgs tasks so far productive but all the diff categories, voices heard, move to more formal WG status

ML: timing/duration; have a sense, taking longer than I perceived was going to take, based on hiring ppl to do this for me

cut a chq and done pretty quick and doesn't seem to be the case here

JMcD: the RFP, bid on, timeline, also fair to say, the value of having a cmnty group great but also true the timeline is extended by having that group involved

CC: want to echo what Mr McD is saying

not like a corp or indivi; this is a public, cmnty, diff skill levels, disparate needs

this isn't just a website it's how we communicate with our citizens

we have to do this; wd not be prudent to create without extensive consultation with the public; less than optimal

I've attended first mtg in Oct then Christmas; some work done, diagnostic done by mbrs and public

how they group District activities, how website being designed

can't see it taking...  we shd be taking as long as it takes to do a good job

agree WG

Mayor: easy to navigate [8:23]; xxx

JMcD: the new WG will have much to say about that.

MOTION: THAT Council refer to the Community Engagement Committee the creation of a Cmnty Website Devt WG, as described in the report dated Jan 9, based on the existing cmnty website devt task team and mbrs, and for consideration of the proposed terms of reference (Appendix 1).

CC: Mr McD requested a Ccl rep and requested attendance; next mtg is Jan 16 so shd settle on Ccl rep tonight; work

Mayor: any mbr can attend [that mtg]; when CEC meets can decide [who]

New face sitting [around table], Mr Koke; welcome him to position

[8:26]

8. Notice of Intent to Consider Proposed Council Procedure Bylaw No. 4730, 2013 (File: 1610-20-4730)

SSch: re xxx

housekeeping amendments; xxx text; bylaws currently with solicitor for review

RECOMMENDED: THAT Public notice be given that it is the intent of Ccl to consider an updated procedure bylaw, as described in the report dated Jan 3, 2013 re Notice of Intent Consideration of Proposed Ccl Procedure Bylaw No. 4730, 2013;

Following statutory notice pursuant to the Community Charter, the proposed updated procedure bylaw be scheduled for Councils consideration at the January 21, 2013 Council meeting.

CC: we have a draft but haven't seen prev to make comparison; xxxSSch: once bylaw given can then make recommendations

good point; there will be a chart showing differences; as done in past

Mayor: carries unanimously [8:28]

9. Greater Vancouver Regional District Labour Relations Service Bylaw No. 1182, 2012 (File: 1200-01)

Mr Schmaltz (TJ): latest chapter in the evolution of the labour relations function

started in earnest in 1991, evolved to what you see before you today

they support us by way of a variety

collective bargaining support and negotiating support as well

DWV four unions, six sep agreements, unique for a small M; complex envmt to work in

further history

report to you for consideration; City of V asking for a new bylaw

make WV a mbr of this function

while not perfect wd xxxx

pp 3 and 4 the most signif changes

first: going back to all Ms under a single tent -- major improvement (some Ms have withdrawn); together for greater collaboration

{for whom???}

by popn, something WV has agitated for (not assessments)

another WV has advocated for is the Lbr Relns bureau for a third level xxx [8:32] -- greater efficiency

we believe this bylaw is an improvement from the past

lower cost we cd not duplicate with alternatives

Sop: I followed you to the bureau a few times, wonder if anything ever got done

Mayor: didn't

Sop: consequently ppl left

efforts to get it off the assessment role improvement

six contracts

what happens if another M sets the tone? obligated to meet? and how impact on WV?

TJ: if a pattern is established, with more than one M contract in advance

v difficult for other Ms to overcome

union wd hv a strong argument wd not settle for less

{EXACTLY}

Sop: great service to HR dept to utilize xxx

TJ: having six sep tables to neg at the resources -- having a negotiator present -- counter, proposals

so we wd be drawing on Vanc; expertise in house, cdn't do

MB: collaborative approach makes sense; all living in the same area; sharing a benefit

pleased to see the prop assessment basis has been reduced

$700K diff between old function and new budget and seems to come primarily from Vanc

how is that going to be reflected?

TJ: great question

the new function set up so that participating Ms, purchase base services, their own, or purchase all their services

allows MetroV to scale up or down

larger Ms have internal resources they may choose to use

MOVED: THAT

1. The report titled Labour Relations Service Bylaw No. 1182, 2012 and dated Jan 9, be received for information;

2. The Council of WV consents to the terms and conditions of withdrawal of the GVRD Labour Relations Service Bylaw No. 1182 and approves the adoption of the GVRD Lbr Relns Service Bylaw No. 1182, 2012 by providing consent on behalf of the electors as laid out in the letter from the Chair of the MetroV Bd dated December 5, 2012; and,

3. Council encourage the Police and Library Bds to endorse the GVRD Lbr Relns Service Bylaw No. 1182, 2012 in order to also make use of the services provided by MetroV.

2. PUBLIC HEARING

Proposed Zoning Bylaw No. 4662, 2010, Amendment Bylaw No. 4736, 2012(File:  1610-20-4736)

The Director of Planning, Lands, and Permits will describe the subject application.

Applicant: Karl Gustavson, Architect, for the owners.

Subject Land: The proposed bylaw amendment applies to 1821 Marine Drive.

Purpose: In 2008, the site was rezoned from C2 (Commercial 2) to AC2 (Ambleside Centre Zone 2) as part of the Districts implementation of the Ambleside Village Strategy. The applicant has demonstrated that a building at 2.0 FAR could have been constructed on the property under the previous C2 zone. The intent is to re-establish this previously permitted density of 2.0 FAR for this property.

Proposed Zoning Bylaw Amendment: the proposed Zoning Bylaw amendment would increase the FAR (Floor Area Ratio) for this property only* from 1.75 to 2.0. There is no building proposed at this time; the rezoning deals only with the proposed increase in FAR. Prior to redevelopment occurring on the site, a Development Permit would be necessary.

* instead of factual, why put this judgemental adjective in?

shd just say: "for this property from 1.75 to 2.0"

RAMSAR -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramsar_Convention

The Ramsar Convention (The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat) is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands,[1] i.e., to stem the progressive encroachment on and loss of wetlands now and in the future, recognizing the fundamental ecological functions of wetlands and their economic, cultural, scientific, and recreational value. It is named after the town of Ramsar in Iran.

The convention was developed and adopted by participating nations at a meeting in Ramsar, Mazandaran, Iran on February 2, 1971, hosted by the Iranian Department of Environment, and came into force on December, 21 1975.

The Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance now includes 2,065 sites (known as Ramsar Sites) covering 197,347,539 ha (487,656,390 acres),[1] up from 1,021 sites in 2000. The nation with the highest number of sites is the United Kingdom at 168; the nation with the greatest area of listed wetlands is Canada, with over 130,000 km2 (50,000 sq mi), including the Queen Maud Gulf Migratory Bird Sanctuary at 62,800 km2 (24,200 sq mi).[2]

Presently there are 163 contracting parties, up from 119 in 1999 and from 21 initial signatory nations in 1971. Signatories meet every three years as the Conference of the Contracting Parties (CCP), the first held in Cagliari, Italy in 1980. Amendments to the original convention have been agreed to in Paris (in 1982) and Regina (in 1987).[3]

There is a standing committee, a scientific review panel, and a secretariat. The headquarters is located in Gland, Switzerland, shared with the IUCN.

+ Subject: [cpthebron] SOUTH HEBRON HILLS: Massafer Yatta – Firing Zone 918 Update

Date: 2 January, 2013 2:07:14 AM PST

On 16 December, lawyers from the Association for Civil Rights in Israel submitted legal objections to Israel's High Court of Justice regarding the planned creation of Firing Zone 918 and the eviction of eight villages in Massafer Yatta. The High Court granted the request for a 30-day extension of the intermediate orders that prevented the displacement of the inhabitants who reside within proposed zone. The lawyers will submit new petitions by 16 January seeking new intermediate orders.

PALESTINE: Foreign troops "train" on Palestinian fields

On 22 January in Massafer Yatta, the area declared "Firing Zone 918" by the Israel military, where about 1000 people live, the atmosphere was tense and uncertain.

According to two international volunteers of Operation Dove who were visiting families in the villages, on 21 January more than one hundred Israeli soldiers pitched their tents outside the military base camp, in front of Jinba village. In addition, they set up camp between Jinba and Mirkez villages (about one kilometre apart), where they started to conduct military exercises, damaging Palestinian fields.

When the internationals asked the soldiers the reason for their presence in an inhabited area, they replied that they were planning to use the area for training for at least a week.

The soldiers' presence is restricting the free movement of the shepherds and their families. Moreover, their deafening exercises are affecting the residents, who feel unsafe and vulnerable.

Margaret Atwood writes that George Orwell was her hero. "To say I was horrified by this book (Animal Farm) would be an understatement. The thing that upset me most was that the pigs were so unjust." http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2013/jan/18/my-hero-george-orwell-atwood

Series: My hero My hero: George Orwell by Margaret Atwood

Margaret Atwood The Guardian, Friday 18 January 2013 20.00 GMT

I grew up with George Orwell. I was born in 1939, and Animal Farm was published in 1945. I read it at age nine. It was lying around the house, and I mistook it for a book about talking animals. I knew nothing about the kind of politics in the book the child's version of politics then, just after the war, consisted of the simple notion that Hitler was bad but dead. To say that I was horrified by this book would be an understatement. The fate of the farm animals was so grim, the pigs were so mean and mendacious and treacherous, the sheep were so stupid. Children have a keen sense of injustice, and this was the thing that upset me the most: the pigs were so unjust.

The whole experience was deeply disturbing, but I am forever grateful to Orwell for alerting me early to the danger flags I've tried to watch out for since. As Orwell taught, it isn't the labels Christianity, socialism, Islam, democracy, two legs bad, four legs good, the works that are definitive, but the acts done in their names....

=== GRAMMARWATCH === well or good?

Things are not all well and good, alas....

Pls, folks, you're usually asked about your health and well-being, not your morals, ethics, ability, or expertise.

There's a difference between a person who is well and one who is good.

Most other languages don't differentiate however English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian do.

Drives me crazy to hear Francophones, for example, saying 'good' when they mean 'well', esp when they wd not mix up bon and bien in French.

If we don't use them with the correct/distinctive meanings, immigrants won't catch the difference b/c it's the same word to them

So, answering "how are you?" has oodles of answers (fabulous, fantastic, well, wonderful, etc), just not 'good' unless you're boasting. 'Great' is fine if you must have a word that starts with a G.

Or, ask "how are things?" b/c good is the right adjective.

"How are things going?" however, needs well b/c it's the adverb.

He's a good golfer; he plays golf well // She's a good pianist; she plays the piano well.

HERITAGE WEEK: FEBRUARY 18-24 2013

Good Neighbours

Heritage Homes and Neighbourhoods

The importance of historic houses and neighbourhoods to our communities is a theme that many people can relate to. While ornate historic houses are what many people think of first when they hear heritage, established, stable, and attractive neighbourhoods make an equally important contribution to the community, creating a positive sense of well being, enjoyment, and security.

The theme explores the character and warmth of historic homes, and the timeless appeal of established, older neighbourhoods with vintage house styles, gardens, landscaping, trees, and boulevards. Often close to the town centre and developed in an era when the automobile was a less dominant feature of daily life, older neighbourhoods lend themselves to a more sustainable lifestyle. Neighbourhoods and districts from earlier eras also promote a layered sense of community history and contribute to visual appeal and variety. They enhance community attractiveness and livability.

Confirmation of the broad appeal of these qualities is reflected in the desirability of heritage homeownership, the premium prices generally paid, and the fact that heritage homes hold their value better than other segments of the residential market. The value of the individual heritage home is significantly affected by its context of other well-preserved vintage homes the market value lies as much with the character of the neighbourhood as with the house itself. There is also the role of heritage homeowners who through their pride of ownership, stewardship, and investment, give a lot to the community.

o Gritty City: Vancouver in the 60s

Presenting movies at the historic Hollywood Theatre

It all came together! We've teamed up with the lovely crew from Church at the Hollywood to bring you a mini-film festival. Through three film nights we look back at Vancouver in the mid-20th century when neon and mid-century architecture were at their zenith, and the grittiness of the city was captured on the screen. Entry and concession are both by donation, all are welcome!

7:30pm January 29 -- Glowing in the Dark (1994)

Produced by Alan Goldman with Cari Green + Directed by Harry Killas. A look at the glory days of neon in Vancouver, Las Vegas and LA. Screening of the film followed by a Q&A led by historian John Atkin, and producer Alan Goldman.

o 96.6% of Vancouverites LOVE heritage buildings

VHF asked Vancouverites what they think about heritage and its connection to current priorities of affordability, energy efficiency, and density. We wanted to know about the public's perception of where Vancouver's heritage is most visible, if too many heritage buildings are being lost to the landfill, and do heritage buildings play a part in meeting modern concerns?

The very illuminating results have been compiled into a comprehensive 30-page paper. We will be launching both the paper and an easy to reference infographic later this month. Can't wait that long? The full paper is up on our website, give it a read and let us know what you think!
